HP organized a soft launch of its new Omen gaming laptop at Pixie Mansion just a few days ago in December 4th, 2014. With the holiday season near, HP Omen’s release is timed just right, for it is now available for order in Malaysia over at HP.com/my/OMEN, with the starting price of RM6,999.
Serena Yong, General Manager of Printing & Personal Systems, HP Singapore & Malaysia, said, “Gamers play to win and expect their PCs to do the same. The HP Omen delivers the power to dominate with a stunning design to give gamers the ultimate gaming experience.”

HP Omen is clearly designed for gamers, combining performance and portability in a stylish package. Powering the Omen is a quad-core Intel Core i7 processor with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M graphics, aiming to deliver stutter-free frame rates and crisp graphics.
Most games today are developed to run in Full HD graphics, therefore HP Omen comes in a 15.6-inch 1080p display that is also touch-enabled, promising smooth frame rates and 72% color gamut. The touchscreen, and even the trackpad, can be turned off completely, to suit gamer’s needs.
Deciding to go for the standard 128GB solid-state drive (SSD), HP said the Omen could load games 2-3 times faster than traditional hard disk drives (HDD). There are also the optional 256GB and 512GB PCIe SSD drives that could give the load times a boost with up to 6-9 times faster than standard HDDs. The RAM comes in a choice of 8GB or 16GB DDR3, while the graphics memory is at 2GB or 4GB GDDR5.
Omen’s industrial design is not just for good looks; it is said to be engineered from the ground up to manage thermals. There are dual fans to pull cool air through the base of the laptop, pushing the hot air through the exhaust fans at the rear of the base. The idea is to keep the heat away from the keyboard, and the gamer’s hands. The thermal management extends down to its rubber feet, which were engineered to prevent the hot air from the exhaust to recirculate back into the notebook, as well as to channel the fresh cool air into the dual fan inlets.
HP Omen weights just around 2.12kg and is only 19.9mm thick, with a chassis CNC-milled from a solid block of aluminum, and later anodized to have a black finish. The display connects to the base through a chrome hinge, that was designed to elevate the former slightly, out of the way of the base where the hot exhaust air exits. To keep the design sleek and sexy, HP also moved all ports — power, HDMI, Mini DisplayPort, and four USB 3.0 — to the back of the laptop. An Ethernet dongle is included if a more stable LAN connection is needed.

Customization
The equally crucial piece of gaming — the keyboard — is also carefully crafted by HP to deliver a crisp feedback, as well as an optimized key spacing and travel. It includes six customizable function keys that can be assigned with weapons, spells, and other actions in a game. To top it all off, the keyboard is not only backlit, it also has multicolor lighting that can be customized.
HP is still partnering with Beats, to offer Beats Audio stereo speakers, on the left and right of the wrist rest. Even these speakers have multicolor lighting that can be customized, just like the keyboard, to respond to the sound and movement in a game, or the music or movie it is playing back.
These customizations are done in the HP Omen Control software that ships with the laptop. The ability to turn off the touchscreen and trackpad mentioned earlier, can also be done from this software.
Accessories
During the soft launch, HP also introduced two accessories to go along with the Omen gaming laptop.
